The course will also be open to taxpayers who want more understanding of the tax system.

The 17-week course commences mid-February 2015 and includes around 50 hours of instruction, generally involving one three-hour classroom session each week, plus additional readings, exercises and homework.

Regional director of H&R Block, Frank Brass said the course can help taxpayers and potential consultants to identify vital deductions in preparing a tax return.

“Our course also identifies where tax offsets are available and covers some of the more complex areas, including capital gains, investment properties and small business taxation.

"Students will discover the skills they learn can enhance their work performance, improve their own financial position and potentially open the door to a new career,” he said.

Subjects covered in the course include knowledge about tax savings available, tax law changes, depreciation and capital gains, negative gearing and tax issues relating to many types of investments.
