Australians embracing the ATO's MyTax System

Tax

More than 2.7 million Australians used MyGov to lodge their tax returns through e-tax or MyTax this year.

This figure was confirmed in a joint statement from the acting assistant treasurer, Mathias Cormann, and the minister for human Services Marise Payne.

MyGov links people to a range of government online services using a single username and password, making it even easier for people to lodge their income tax returns online.

According to the joint statement, Australians have created more than 3.4 million new MyGov accounts since e-tax and MyTax became available, bringing the total number of active accounts to 5.8 million.

Despite this, the IPA recently said the ATO’s new online lodgement system has not reduced the overall demand for services offered by tax agents.

According to IPA chief executive officer Andrew Conway, tax agents and accountants remain an integral part of many Australians' tax affairs.

“While the process for lodging simple tax returns is becoming more streamlined with pre-filling, taxpayers are still turning to their tax agent and public accountant to organise their affairs as part of their annual tax health check,” he said.

“Historically more than 70 per cent of the public used a tax agent as their trusted adviser and this remains the case today,” said Mr Conway.
