ATO looks to bolster liaison group

The tax office has beefed up its search for Australian small businesses to join the ATO Small Business Liaison Group, calling for expressions of interest from the business community.

Steve Vesperman, ATO deputy commissioner, spoke of the importance of working in tandem with small business to ease the strain of tax and super management.
“The best way for us to work out what small businesses need is to have ongoing engagement with them and their industry representatives directly – the Small Business Liaison Group gives us this opportunity,” he said.
“To do this well, we need the liaison group to include a range of industry bodies and other associations representing small business. We also want to work with the people who know small business the best – the owners themselves,” he added.
Mr Vesperman noted that consultation with small business has proven to be one of the best ways to deliver improved services, and praised additional collaborative tools such the Small Business Consultation Panel, a list of small business operators who assist the tax office on short-term consultation activities.
Liaison group members attend three meetings each year, and assist with occasional out-of-session work.
