“We’re hoping that the momentum, especially around small business reform, continues and we’ll be very eager to continue with our advocacy efforts to push the case for reform around small business matters,” Ms Stylianou said.
The work of former small business minster Bruce Billson, who worked heavily with the IPA in delivering the white paper, was praised by Ms Stylianou, noting that a small business presence within cabinet itself made a “big difference” to reform and discussion.
“No matter what the challenges are and no matter what the obstacle might be, you really need someone to champion those issues, and that’s what I think Minister Billson was doing,” she added.
With Kelly O'Dwyer now appointed as Minister for Small Business and Assistant Treasurer to champion the government's push for tax reform, Ms Stylianou welcomed the new addition to cabinet.
"We welcome Ms O'Dwyer to the role and we say thank you very much to Bruce Billson," she said.
Alex Malley, CEO of CPA Australia, was quick to point out that action on economic reform is an imminent need.
“Forget the fanfare and congratulatory slaps on the back – new Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has a job to do and no time to waste,” he said.
Mr Malley said the recent 0.2 per cent economic growth figure shows “barely a pulse in the economy”, adding that “now is the time to put an end to policy paralysis”.
“It is heartening to hear Mr Turnbull talking about creating a culture of innovation in our country as a way to create the high paying jobs of the future for our children. He’s absolutely right,” he said.
Mr Malley concluded by stating that “Mr Turnbull has commenced his tenure talking about economic leadership. If he can deliver on this and effectively engage with the community, then his new administration will be most welcome.”
