Former ATO director joins H&R Block

Regulation

A former senior director at the ATO has joined tax accounting group H&R Block.

By Staff Reporter 8 minute read

Mark Chapman, formerly a senior director at the ATO and most recently head of tax at Taxpayers Australia, has joined the accounting group in the newly created role of director of tax communications.

H&R Block managing director, Brodie Dixon, said the appointment has come at a great time given the current debate around Australia’s taxation system.

“We are excited to appoint an executive of Mark’s standing to build H&R Block’s internal capability and industry reputation as technical tax experts and advocates for the taxpayer.

“There are many developments occurring in the tax sector, spurred on by the recent release of the Treasury white paper, and as the market leader in the preparation of tax returns, H&R wants to lead the debate about the future of Australia’s tax system”, he added.

Mr Chapman’s first project at H&R Block has been to develop a ‘green paper’ detailing the firm’s perspectives on the future of the tax system and priorities for Treasury to consider as part of its own tax system review project.

He will also be charged with building the HRB Australia Tax Institute, while developing, maintaining and executing the HRB regulator engagement strategy.

Commenting on his role, Mr Chapman said, “H&R Block is committed to Australia and we see strong opportunities in the ever increasing number of people wanting professional help to get their tax affairs in order.

“We will be active in engaging the federal government and the industry to ensure there is a good outcome for all parties following the review of the tax system.”
