Union flags government dispute with ATO

Tax office staff are “likely to reject” a proposed enterprise agreement that would see 300 staff lose their jobs while those left would have to work an additional 5.2 days per year, according to the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU).

Under the agreement, staff will be offered a 0.8 per cent per year pay increase for the next three years but with working hours increased by 2 per cent.

CPSU national secretary Nadine Flood described the agreement as the “latest pack of nasties” from Minister Abetz “who appears determined to lead the federal government into a dispute with their 165,000 employees”.

“Under this proposal, workers will see an increase in their working hours but their pay will go backwards. It’s a pay cut; there’s no other way to view it. This deal would leave workers worse off than before.

“Meanwhile, the work and the pressure on staff to deliver much-needed revenue to the government continue to pile up,” Ms Flood added.

“This offer in the ATO has taken months to get Senator Abetz’s sign off. The ATO offer reveals the Abbott Government’s real position in bargaining with public servants – cutting rights and conditions, cutting living standards, and cutting jobs.”

Ms Flood said the CPSU was seeking members’ views for the union’s next steps but that initial feedback has been very negative.
