CAs lobby for national NFP regime

Business

A coalition of peak bodies joined by Charted Accountants ANZ have lobbied state and federal governments for the provision of a national fundraising regime for charities and other not-for-profits.

Charted Accountants ANZ (CA ANZ) policy and thought leader Geraldine Magarey says such reform would save charities $15 million each year.

“Under the current system, charities are hindered from doing the core of their role. Significant resources go into adhering to outdated and different laws across each state,” Ms Magarey explained.

“Charities will continue to be placed under further strain, and as key providers of services across states we need to ensure they are able to carry out their core competencies with the resources they have,” she said.

CA ANZ was joined by the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Governance Institute of Australia, CPA Australia, and Justice Connect among others in their call for a nationally-consistent regulatory regime.

“Up to seven permissions need to be sought to collect funds in Australia — and this is without a digital platform, these inefficiencies will continue to impact the not-for-profit sector which will impact communities and the economy,” Ms Magarey said.

“Improved regulation and regime will ensure that more benefits are delivered to all Australians, particularly to those most in need of it.”
