Deloitte CEO leads charge for workplace equality

Business

Deloitte CEO Cindy Hook has argued that Australian organisations need to work much harder to ensure talented women achieve senior level positions.

Ms Hook stressed that Deloitte is determined to intensify its focus on achieving a diverse and inclusive workplace for all employees.

The pledge comes with Deloitte recently named a 2015 employer of choice for gender equality by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA), one of 90 Australian businesses to receive such a citation.

“There has been improvement, but we all need to be moving faster to improve the rate of change,” she said.

Echoing the findings of a recent survey conducted by leading Australian universities, Ms Hook emphasised the need for strong investment strategies to ensure that diversity and inclusion are ingrained in operations.

The survey, titled Diversity and Inclusion Practices in Australia, found that almost 70 per cent of organisations that linked their managers’ performance to diversity and inclusion outcomes noted that the policy resulted in improved business performance.

“2015 has been an important year for diversity and inclusion in all forms at Deloitte. Our commitment in this area has been longstanding and it continues. But we recognise that diversity brings competitive advantage and we need to do more,” Ms Hook stated.

In an attempt to accelerate progress on diversity and inclusion, Deloitte has recently appointed internal ‘diversity and inclusion senior champions’, spanning the areas of gender equality, sexual orientation and cultural difference.

“The journey towards workplace gender equality has been, and remains, a marathon, not a sprint, for our firm,” Ms Hook concluded.
