Simplicity still key, says MYOB

Business

Simplicity and ease of use are still pivotal in the world of technology and cloud-based software, according to MYOB's chief technology officer.

Speaking to AccountantsDaily, Simon Raik-Allen, chief technical officer at MYOB, said despite all the recent changes in accounting technology, simplicity and user access still triumph in a saturated software market.

“In the old days you’d have an idea and people would love it because there was nothing like it before, no matter how clunky the experience was – those days are gone”, he said.

Mr Raik-Allen highlighted the use of micro-interactions in achieving this ease of use, and noted the key benefits of incorporating cloud-based software into business operations.

“They’ve now got a two-way communication channel with their client and it completely streamlines and changes the relationship. That’s way more than just efficiency. They’ve opened up another mode of communication”, he said.

Mr Raik-Allen added that micro-interactions come in many forms – from the integration of digital signature technology, to processes which allow for clients to easily pick up from where they left off when using the software.

Noting the difficulties in terms of developing and maintaining simplistic software, Mr Raik-Allen stressed that levels of technological expertise and interest will vary from client to client.

“One of the challenges is that when a customer comes to your product, they’re coming from a different place, and they’re coming with a different context. If you’ve got 1,000 customers, you’ve got 1,000 new cases of how they will arrive at your product and the ways they’re thinking,” he said.

Mr Raik-Allen added that plans for the MYOB Portal product are under development and will be rolled out gradually.
