KPMG announces record number of new partners

Business
KPMG has today announced a record intake of 51 new partners, with a significant increase in the number of females appointed to the position.

In the latest round of partner appointments, effective 1 July 2015, 37 per cent are for senior female executives, up from 24 per cent last year. In addition, a record 56 per cent of internal promotions to partner were female.

KPMG said it has taken a proactive stance to address gender diversity in the workplace, introducing gender targets of 25 per cent female partners and 40 per cent women in senior leadership by July 2016.

According to the firm, a number of this year’s new female partners are on flexible working arrangements, working three and four days per week, while two women were promoted to partner positions while on, or about to take, maternity leave.

KPMG Australia's CEO, Gary Wingrove, said the firm has made concerted and disciplined efforts to create a level playing field to support the career success of women at KPMG.

“We’ve enhanced agile working opportunities and improved parental leave support and policies resulting in a return to work rate of 96 percent. This is really starting to make a difference to many of our people – both men and women,” Mr Wingrove said.

Overall, the proportion of external hires increased by 23 per cent from the previous three-year average to 35 per cent of new partners. Fifty-three per cent of appointments were from internal promotions – representing a 17 per cent increase from 2014 – while 12 per cent of new partners came from acquisitions.

“The growth in lateral hires reflects continued demand by clients for industry and technical specialists, while the increase in internal promotions demonstrates our commitment to invest in our people’s capability to help them achieve their potential,” Mr Wingrove said.

Around half of the new partners were appointed in the firm’s advisory practice while the private enterprise and tax practices both accounted for 18 per cent of new partners.

The largest sector investment went to financial services, infrastructure, government and healthcare, with 22 new partners.

Mr Wingrove said this marks a shift from the ENR (energy and natural resources) focus of previous years.

"However, the trend towards financial services, infrastructure, government and healthcare services is directionally positive for a more diversified Australian economy for the longer term,” Mr Wingrove added.
