As more small and medium-sized businesses move to the cloud, new research has revealed a large proportion of SMEs are dissatisfied with the speed and cost of their internet connection.

SMEs 'frustrated' by Australia's online providers

The most recent MYOB Business Monitor survey shows 24 per cent of businesses surveyed are dissatisfied with the speed of their internet connection and 23 per cent are unhappy with the cost.

The same survey revealed that 46 per cent of SMEs are now using cloud computing, up nine per cent in the last six months.
MYOB chief technology officer Simon Raik-Allen said that while it is encouraging to see the increased adoption of cloud-based operations, having more SMEs make the shift would bring significant benefits to the Australian economy.
“As we realise improvements in the nation’s online infrastructure via the National Broadband Network (NBN) roll out, the benefits to Australian businesses and the economy will be significant. The results show that SMEs who use cloud computing are reporting stronger revenue growth than those who are yet to embrace cloud technologies,” said Mr Raik-Allen.
Almost half (47 per cent) of survey respondents believe that being connected to the NBN would make a positive impact to their business.
Supporting this belief, the survey showed that 27 per cent of SMEs using cloud computing saw their revenue increase in the past 12 months, which compares with 20 per cent for non-cloud users.
Cloud users are also more likely to expect revenue to increase in the year ahead (39 per cent), compared with 27 per cent of non-cloud users.
