Xero, Intuit launch start-up programs

Xero and Intuit have both announced initiatives designed to help Australian start-ups manage their finances.

Xero’s initiative will see it join forces with a number of start-up organisations including Australia largest tech incubator Fishburners, while Intuit QuickBooks Online will sponsor Start-up Weekend Australia.

Start-up Weekend is a global community of passionate entrepreneurs dedicated to helping innovators with the basics of founding start-ups and launching successful ventures, which has held more than 1,800 events in 120 countries.

According to Intuit, the sponsorship will help deliver a national series of events aimed at providing skills, connections and inspiration for Australia’s growing start-up community.

Managing director of Intuit Australia, Nicolette Maury, said start-ups have been at the heart of Intuit’s success, making the collaboration a perfect fit for the company, which itself is known as a 30-year-old start-up.

“Start-up Weekend events are about less talk, more action. They are about enabling, not telling entrepreneurs how to connect the ideas and people they need to grow a new company and, as the primary sponsor in Australia, we’re excited to be able to connect with hundreds of bright sparks across more than 24 events in 12 locations.

“Intuit QuickBooks Online is committed to being a part of the entrepreneurship ecosystem in Australia and, together with Start-up Weekend Australia, is proud to be here for our start-up and small business community,” she said.

Xero Australia’s managing director Chris Ridd, said their program was part of Xero’s own efforts to support entrepreneurial activity and champion small businesses.

“Small businesses are the backbone of the Australian economy,” he said.

“Xero is a powerful tool for entrepreneurs to foster sustainable and successful businesses and we’re happy to provide value back to the start-up community and support them any way we can,” added Mr Ridd.

“We know that for start-ups, managing cash flow and keeping a close eye on finances is critical for success.”

“With software like Xero a small business owner has real time access to their finances — anywhere, anytime,” Mr Ridd said.

Murray Hurps, general manager of Fishburners, said Xero is a good fit for many in the Fishburners community.

“Xero was an early adopter of cloud accounting in Australia, with the platform being built in the cloud from inception. We have a large community of early adopters and disruptors at Fishburners and partnering with an innovative company like Xero is a natural alignment.”

“Xero is the accounting software of choice for start-ups working at Fishburners, so we’re thrilled to offer them a special deal,” Mr Hurps added.

Xero has also partnered with the League of Extraordinary Women, Australia’s fastest-growing movement of driven and dynamic female entrepreneurs; Start-up Grind, an event series in Melbourne and Sydney designed to connect local entrepreneurs and That Start-up Show, a new web series promoting Australian start-ups.
