Mr Howes resigned from his role at the AWU in March and there has been much conjecture around his future career. He will joing KPMG on 21 July 2014.

A statement from KPMG said Mr Howes will consult with clients in three key areas – business transformation, transaction services and superannuation.
John Somerville, head of Advisory at KPMG Australia described Mr Howes as one of the country’s top industry talents and said the firm is extremely pleased to have him on-board.
“For business transformation, Paul presents our clients with unique insights on motivating workforces to drive productivity and ultimately, improve business performance,” said Mr Sommerville.
"As the transactions market heats up and margins for error are thin, specialist consideration of people and workplace issues are critical for successful integrations,” he added.
"Paul will also provide insights to the rapidly growing and changing superannuation sector, drawing from his experience as a director and deputy chair of Australia’s largest industry super fund," Mr Sommerville said.
Mr Howes said he has been comtemplating his next move for sometime and thought KPMG presented the right opportunity.
"The firm has offered me a diverse role, with a great opportunity to use my skills and experiences in a different way, working with highly talented teams. I am very much looking forward to my new career, where I hope to use my experience to help organisations grow and be successful.”
Mr Howes remains a director of not-for-profit group beyondblue, but has resigned all other previously held directorships and offices.
As national secretary of the Australian Workers' Union, Mr Howes was responsible for the financial and organisational management of the union, which employed more than 450 staff across 45 offices.
At the time of his resignation, Mr Howes said he was not ruling anything in or anything out when it comes to a possible political career.
