Carbon boosts Perth presence with Ezetax takeover

Business

The group’s aggressive expansion strategy has almost tripled its headcount in 12 months.

The Carbon Group has made its fourth acquisition this year in the takeover of Ezetax, a small practice in the Perth suburb of Inglewood.

Carbon said Ezetax director Todd Zani and two staff will join Carbon Swan Valley, in the outer suburb of Ellenbrook, and the Ezetax brand will discontinue.

Carbon Swan Valley accounting and tax partner Michelle Maynard welcomed its expansion in the region.

“After meeting Todd and the Ezetax team, we knew that this partnership would be a perfect fit and we are beyond thrilled to announce it to the public,” she said.

“Our clients are our top priority and we know that by growing our team with experts who share our passion we will be able to achieve even more for our clients.”

Mr Zani, who established Ezetax in 1999 and joined Carbon as an accounting and tax partner, was excited by the prospects of the move.

“At Ezetax, we’ve been dedicated to providing the highest quality financial, accounting, taxation and company secretarial services possible to our clients,” he said.

“It was very refreshing to meet Carbon Group and realise that we shared the same passion and goals, so I am very excited about what we will be able to achieve for our clients by working together.”

The acquisition is Carbon’s fourth this year and its second in Western Australia after formalising a merger with Perth-based Kensington Financial Group in July. The entire Kensington Financial Group relocated to Carbon’s largest office in Osborne Park.

In early August, Ipswich-based Harding Martin joined Carbon to become its fourth office in Queensland and 17th nationally, adding 20 staff to the group.

Later that month, it added two offices and 50 staff to its NSW presence by taking over the Sydney bookkeeping start-up Numeric Eight.

The mergers had boosted staff numbers to 290, Carbon said, almost tripling its headcount according to last year’s Australian Financial Review Top 100, in which it ranked 39th.

Carbon Group, which began nine years ago with one office in Perth, said its “aggressive growth strategy” had seen it expand to offices in every major state.

Two years ago it takeover trail began in Western Australia with the acquisition of Perth-based firms Haydon Kinnaird and Myriad Financial.

Last year, Carbon added South Australian firm Symes Accountants, which had been based in Gawler since 1986.

Carbon launched in 2014 after a chance meeting of founders Jamie Davison, who ran a bookkeeping and CFO services consultancy, and Nathan Hood, who was working in a traditional accounting firm.

Carbon Group was awarded Firm of the Year at the Australian Accounting Awards in both 2018 and 2020.
