Brisbane accountant achieves push-up world record

A Brisbane accountant is now the holder of the world record for the most push-ups in one hour at 3,206, breaking the previous record of 3,182.

The founder and CEO of specialist small-business accounting firm Evergent, Lucas Helmke, was officially recognised by Guinness World Records after completing the feat at the end of last year.
Mr Helmke told the world record organisation that he attempted the record to inspire his one-year-old son and show him nothing was impossible.
The world’s fittest accountant pushed out the 3,206 reps within one hour at an average of over 53 per minute.
To achieve the record he broke the hour down into 30-second sets with the goal of completing 26 push-ups in each one, which he achieved with a rate of 26.7 push-ups every 30 seconds.
To break the record, Mr Helmke trained for over two years and was required to maintain perfect form for each push-up otherwise it would not count.
Perfect form was determined as “the body must be lowered until at least a 90-degree angle is attained at the elbow, then raised until the arms are straight,” according to Guinness World Records.
Mr Helmke’s physical achievements are echoed in his professional accomplishments, after starting his own accounting firm, Evergent, in 2018. Prior to that, he worked as a senior adviser at KPMG.
Evergent said it aimed to disrupt the accounting industry and provide services for entrepreneurs and small businesses.
The firm said its goal was to ensure small-business owners and entrepreneurs could achieve their dreams while Mr Helmke’s own ambitions go beyond the push-up world record.
“This will be the first record, I wish to set a number of other push-up records,” said Mr Helmke.
“Then on to other physical records.”
