AICPA and CIMA set up inaugural Australasian committee

The American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), have launched an Australasian area committee to promote themselves and support members.

The committee was created under the aegis of the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants, which was founded in 2017 by the two accountancy bodies.
The association represents approximately 700,000 members and students globally, with about 5,000 members and 700 students in the Australasia region.
The American bodies said they already had ties with other accounting organisations in the region such as CPA Australia and CA ANZ and had signed a mutual agreement with the former.
“We have a good relationship with other accounting bodies in Australia, as we do with other accounting organisations, regulators and standard setters around the world,” said Laura Fenn, finance director at private weather service provider Weatherzone and chair of the Australasia area committee.
“We all share a common goal of advancing the accounting profession in Australia, and the region as a whole, and hope that there will be opportunities for closer collaboration in the future.
“To help our members make the most of their professional qualification, we have signed a mutual recognition agreement with CPA Australia, giving members from each professional body an opportunity to expand their career opportunities to either CIMA or CPA Australia membership.”
Ms Fenn said the committee would advocate for its members in the region and continue to increase the scope of the association.
“In the last couple of years, we’ve experienced steady growth, and we hope to continue on this path,” she said.
“We have members and students working in a wide range of roles, across the private, public, and not-for-profit sectors.
“We look forward to advocating for all our members and collaborating with other regions as we drive member engagement, with a focus on our region’s goal; working with organisations, members and students in raising the profile of AICPA and CIMA in Australasia.”
In 2012, AICPA and CIMA established the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) distinction, which is now the most widely held management accounting designation globally with more than 137,000 holders.
While CIMA has been present in Australia since 1958 the launch of the committee would assist its growth and provide advancement for its members, it said.
“Our members’ success is — and always has been — at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to help our members reach their full potential and give them what they need to stay ahead in a digital-led business world,” said Ms Fenn.
“We regularly update our qualifications, release new thought leadership, courses, events and other learning resources to equip them with the skills required by businesses.
“We provide them with a suite of continuing professional development opportunities to enable them to choose activities which best support their professional needs and career development.”
