CA timetabling issues see more delays for students in 2018

This means some students who have otherwise completed their courses by the second half of 2018, can’t enrol in Capstone until January 2019, with final results issued in July and August 2019.
Many students are finding significant hold-ups in completing their CA as a result.
A spokesperson for Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand told Accountants Daily the association is looking at how it can accommodate impacted students.
The association will offer flexibility to those students looking to enrol in Capstones for terms one and two this year, and is “examining options” for those who wanted to enrol in term three.
“We are committed to ensuring timely progression through the CA Program,” the spokesperson said.
This echoes the issues experienced by students last year, where 900 were impacted by a timetabling re-structure from semesters to trimesters. To accommodate those students, CA ANZ added another term to its 2017 timetable.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, one student told Accountants Daily they were surprised at the structure of the 2018 timetable, and expected Capstone to be available within a more reasonable time frame.
“For me and other students, delaying the qualification means missing out on salary opportunities. Having my CA increases salary potential. Once you have it, you’re at a whole new level, which is why there is so much interest in doing it,” the student said.
Another student who experienced similar issues last year spoke to Accountants Daily on condition of anonymity, and said having students’ CA completion delayed again because of administrative issues is “ridiculous.”
“Achieving my CA qualification is really important to me because of what it communicates to the industry about me. When I was studying, I wanted to get it completed as quickly as possible because it is a huge time and thought burden whilst working full-time; my completion could impact my salary and career progression; and I had worked so hard at it, I didn’t want it to be delayed at all,” they said.
“Students really just want to be able to do their capstone course, the final one in the program, asap; it is ridiculous that they should have their completion of the CA program delayed simply because of an overlap of the commencement date and the release date of results from their last technical module,” they said.
