Mid-tier locks in new merger

One national mid-tier firm has announced the merger of a Melbourne firm with one of its key service lines, and is eyeing further growth and lateral hires.

BDO confirmed to Accountants Daily the merger of Melbourne-based business advisory, tax and accounting firm Whelan & Cook with its existing BDO Business Services team.

The merger will be effective from 1 July 2017.

Partner and director at Whelan & Cook, Sharron Kyroussis, will continue as partner at BDO. Partner Malcolm Fielden will join BDO as a consultant, and senior manager Koraly Georgiou will join as a principal.

A further 11 Whelan & Cook team members will also move to BDO’s Docklands office.

Speaking to Accountants Daily, BDO partner Mark Pizzacalla said the move solidifies the firm’s plans for growth in the business services area, and the firm is open to further mergers, acquisitions and organic growth.

Mr Pizzacalla also said BDO will be looking at further lateral hires to support growth in the business unit.

David Garvey, managing partner, BDO Melbourne, is confident the offering with boost BDO’s presence as a service provider in the SME market.

“This is a further step forward in the demand for BDO’s technical expertise in business services and will allow the firm to further strengthen its offering to the SME sector,” he said.
