Grant Thornton has appointed a former director at Deloitte as the lead of its national stamp duty and land tax practice.

Kristina Popova will be a partner within the specialist tax team as a state taxes expert and will work out of the firm’s Melbourne office.

Partner and head of national specialist tax at Grant Thornton Elizabeth Lucas said that the addition of Ms Popova would provide additional benefits to its clients.

“In addition to being a stamp duty specialist, Kristina’s experience spans across land tax and various state specific taxes,” said Ms Lucas.

“She has worked in big four accounting and top tier law firm environments, and brings with her a wealth of experience which will be of direct benefit to our clients.”

“Kristina will support the firm nationally and we are looking forward to working with her as part of the team.”

Grant Thornton said that Ms Popova arrived at the firm with experience in a broad range of state tax issues across multiple industries including major projects, funds, retail, and more.

She also brought experience in advising on state taxes, revenue investigations, and stamp duty implications for all phases of M&A transactions, which enabled her to provide multi-jurisdictional advice focused on commercial and tax outcomes.

Ms Popova said she was looking forward to bringing her experience to help Grant Thornton’s clients.

“Having provided advice across a number of diverse industries on matters of all sizes, I understand the importance of providing clients with timely, clear and concise communication that deconstructs the technical and complex nature of state taxes,” she said.

“State taxes is a highly technical, complex and changing landscape.”

“It is essential that clients are aware of their obligations and the revenue law consequences and opportunities of their transactions.”

Ms Popova has advised and acted on indirect tax disputes across the Supreme Court of Victoria, the Federal Court of Australia, the Victoria Civil and Administrative Tribunal, and the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

Grant Thornton is part of a global network that has over 61,700 professionals across 147 countries with the Australian team consisting of 165 partners and 1,300 staff across offices in Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth.
